Mind map on Crucial Conversations

This is one of my all time favorite mind maps and I really do use it many times before having a conversation on the phone just to remind me of a few key points. I actually have found myself reviewing while talking on the telephone. The book, Crucial Conversations Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High, Second Edition is literally the definitive guide on the subject.

Crucial Conversation

I find few people invest the time it takes to improve on creating effective dialogues. We will send people to learn many techniques but when is the last time you took a class on “How to have a Conversation”. The book starts out with a self-assessment of yourself. In an engaging manner, this was an audio book for me, the authors use examples and exercises to learn the techniques described. How many of us know the magic of making it safe for others to express their true feelings and desires?

P.S. This is an excellent book for any facilitator.

How does your State of Mind alter your Decisions?

Dr. Reldan, "Relly," Nadler was my guest on the Business901 Podcast. Our talked centered on leadership and developing the state of mind for making effective decisions. It is interesting what I learned about our mental models and as a result our everyday decisions.

Dr. Nadler is a leading psychologist and Executive Coach focusing on developing and providing cutting edge Emotional Intelligence tools and strategies for CEO's, Executives, leaders, managers and their organizations and teams.  His company, True North Leadership, recognizes and addresses the challenges leaders face today:sm_dr._reldan_nadler

Problems:

  • The USA lost 8.4 million jobs from 2007 to 2009.
  • 40% of the American workforce will be eligible for retirement in 2010.  Leaders have to contend with a projected shortfall of 10 million workers in the next few years.
  • The Baby Boomer generation that is retiring has a higher Emotional Intelligence than Generation X and Y people who are coming into leadership positions.  This is due to their time utilizing technology rather than face-to-face interaction with others.
  • Developing leadership bench strength has been a priority for organizations for the last 4 years.

His newest book, Leading with Emotional Intelligence: Hands-On Strategies for Building Confident and Collaborative Star Performers' target=_blank>Leading with Emotional Intelligence: Hands-On Strategies for Building Confident and Collaborative Star Performers' target=_blank>Leading with Emotional Intelligence, gives hands-on solutions to these problems and more. After working with over 15,000 leaders over 30 years, Dr. Nadler has distilled some of his best advice and tips.  After Daniel Goleman sold 5 million copies of Emotional Intelligence, readers and leaders have been looking for hard-hitting ways to raise their Emotional Intelligence and the people they lead.

Big Book of marketing from Atlas Air to Boeing

I had the pleasure of interviewing Anthony Bennet editor of the new book, THE BIG BOOK OF MARKETING released in January 2010 by McGraw-Hill on the Business901 Podcast. the book is based on material developed for one of Georgetown University Business School’s most popular marketing courses, THE BIG BOOK OF MARKETING is a unique and comprehensive guide to essential marketing practices from the world’s best marketers. The 86 companies represented in the book are industry leaders representing a range of goods and services, high-tech and low-tech industries, and industrial and consumer fields. Each chapter offers their real-life lessons and practical takeaways on every topic necessary for marketers to master today.Anthony Bennett

As Tony said in the podcast it is not a book filled with ideas from PHD’s. It is a book filled with authors that have CEO, V.P after their names and companies from Boeing to Atlas Air and BzzAgent to Ogilvy. What I found interesting in the book is the diversity of the content. I called it a book of short stories! Great reading, Great knowledge of information.

Anthony G. Bennett (Washington, D.C.) has worked in marketing for over 22 years, including as an international marketing research analyst with Union Camp (now International Paper), general manager/vice president for Hunt-Marmillion Public Relations (now Ogilvy), Special Assistant promoting the first Bush administration’s National Energy Strategy, and marketing consultant to small companies and national organizations. He now teaches marketing at Georgetown University.

Public Relations Marketing

I have access to so many good articles as a result of my affiliate status and seldom use them as often as I should. So who better to start the series out with than with Palo Alto Software and Tim Berry.

Excerpt from On Target: The Book on Marketing Plans by Tim Berry and Doug Wilson

Public Relations involves a variety of programs designed to maintain or enhance a company's image and the products and services it offers. Successful implementation of an effective public relations strategy can be a critical component to a marketing plan.

A public relations (PR) strategy may play a key role in an organization's promotional strategy. A planned approach to leveraging public relations opportunities can be just as important as advertising and sales promotions. Public relations is one of the most effective methods to communicate and relate to the market. It is powerful and, once things are in motion, it is the most cost effective of all promotional activities. In some cases, it is free.

The success of well executed PR plans can be seen through several organizations that have made it a central focus of their promotional strategy. Paul Newman's Salad Dressing, The Body Shop, and Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream have positioned their organizations through effective PR strategies. Intel, Sprint and Microsoft have leveraged public relations to introduce and promote new products and services.

Marketing Plan Pro

Similar to the foundational goals of marketing, effective public relations seeks to communicate information to:

  • Launch new products and services.
  • Reposition a product or service.
  • Create or increase interest in a product, service, or brand.
  • Influence specific target groups.
  • Defend products or services that have suffered from negative press or perception.
  • Enhance the firm's overall image.
  • The result of an effective public relations strategy is to generate additional revenue through greater awareness and information for the products and services an organization offers.

Goals and Objectives

Good strategy begins with identifying your goals and stating your objectives. What are the goals and objectives behind your public relations strategy and can they be measured and quantified?

Each of these areas may reflect the goals your public relations campaign may seek to accomplish.

Press relations
Communicating news and information of interest about organizations in the most positive light.

Product and service promotion
Sponsoring various efforts to publicize specific products or services.

Firm communications
Promoting a better and more attractive understanding of the organization with internal and external communications.

Lobbying
Communicating with key individuals to positively influence legislation and regulation.

Internal feedback
Advising decision makers within the organization regarding the public's perception and advising actions to be taken to change negative opinions.
